The Story

A young girl’s diary becomes a record of dreams, family, loss and resilience as her world changes around her.

Synopsis

A diary that begins with dreams

Gaza Diary follows twelve-year-old Mariam, whose innocent hope meets the harsh reality of life in a conflict-ridden Gaza.

Mariam begins writing in a simple diary. Inside it, she records her dreams of becoming a doctor, memories of her family and the everyday moments that continue to exist despite the violence around her.

Her younger brother Ahmed finds comfort in a toy ambulance, an object that becomes closely connected with ideas of hope and survival. Her father Yusuf encourages Mariam and tells her that her diary will make history.

That fragile sense of security is shattered when soldiers force Yusuf away. Mariam and her family are pushed into displacement and uncertainty, eventually finding themselves in a refugee camp.

As Mariam continues writing, the diary becomes more than a personal record. It becomes a way to preserve memories, document what she experiences and hold on to the possibility of a future beyond the darkness.
