India
Mahatma Gandhi
Freedom Fighter / Political and Social Reformer
Profile
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869–1948) was a major leader of India’s freedom movement and a prominent advocate of non-violent political action. Government of India cultural and archival records describe his central role in the independence movement and his use of Satyagraha and civil disobedience.
Palestine Connection
Gandhi addressed the Arab-Jewish question in Palestine in his journal Harijan. His article “The Jews” was published on 26 November 1938 after he had received letters asking for his views on the Palestine question and the persecution of Jews in Germany. He expressed sympathy for Jews facing persecution while also arguing that his sympathy did not remove what he described as the requirements of justice for the Arab population of Palestine.
He returned to the subject in “Jews and Palestine”, published in Harijan on 21 July 1946. In that later piece he again condemned violence and argued for a non-violent approach to the dispute.
Statements & Public Record
26 November 1938Harijan, “The Jews”. Gandhi discussed Jewish persecution and the Arab-Jewish question in Palestine.
21 July 1946Harijan, “Jews and Palestine”. Gandhi again addressed Palestine, justice and non-violence.
“Palestine belongs to the Arabs in the same sense that England belongs to the English or France to the French.”
Gandhi wrote this in his 26 November 1938 Harijan article, “The Jews”, while discussing the Arab-Jewish question in Palestine.
Contribution & Actions
Gandhi’s documented contribution on Palestine was primarily through public writing and advocacy. His Palestine-related record is preserved through his published writings and the larger archival corpus of the Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi.
His 1938 and 1946 writings are particularly important because they record his views before the establishment of the State of Israel and within the political circumstances of Mandatory Palestine.

Ottoman Empire
Sultan Abdul Hamid II
Ottoman Sultan · 1876–1909
Profile
Sultan Abdülhamid II (1842–1918) ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1876 to 1909. Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire throughout his reign, and his government treated the territory as strategically important within the empire’s wider imperial policy.
Palestine Connection
Historical research based on Ottoman land records shows that Abdülhamid II acquired substantial private lands in Palestine. A Cambridge study estimates that the lands purchased in Palestine amounted to around 3% of the total area and explains that these acquisitions were used in part to strengthen Ottoman control over strategically sensitive areas.
Ottoman policy during his reign also sought to control Jewish immigration and settlement in Palestine. United Nations historical records preserve the account of Theodor Herzl’s approach to the Sultan concerning a Jewish national home in Palestine and Abdul Hamid’s refusal to grant such a charter.
Statements & Public Record
Herzl approach to the SultanThe United Nations historical record preserves an account that Theodor Herzl sought Ottoman permission for Jewish immigration and a national home in Palestine, and records Abdul Hamid II as refusing to grant Palestine for that purpose.
“Go and tell Dr. Herzl that I will not give one square foot of Palestine to the Jews. It is not my own property, but the property of my subjects who fertilized it with their blood. Let the Jews keep their millions for themselves.”
Quoted in a United Nations historical record of the Palestine question; the record attributes these words to Abdul Hamid II.
Ottoman Palestine policyOttoman policy under his reign restricted Jewish immigration and settlement in Palestine while maintaining imperial control over the territory.
Contribution & Actions
His documented Palestine connection is an Ottoman imperial and land-policy record rather than a modern Palestinian political programme. The archive therefore presents his position within the historical context of Ottoman sovereignty over Palestine and the emerging Zionist movement.

His work spans multiple conflicts, including the Second Intifada and successive wars in Gaza. During the 2023–24 war, his reporting continued from inside the Strip while he and his family were repeatedly displaced.
His work became deeply personal during the war.
