Nakba (النكبة)
Arabic for “Catastrophe.” Refers to the 1947-1948 expulsion of over 750,000 Palestinians, the destruction of 530+ villages, and the seizure of 78% of historic Palestine by Israel. The Nakba is an ongoing process, not just a historical event — displacement continues through demolitions and settlement expansion. 15 May is commemorated as Nakba Day.
Naksa (النكسة)
Arabic for “Setback.” Refers to the 1967 Six-Day War when Israel occupied the West Bank, Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem, Golan Heights, and Sinai. Resulted in the displacement of 400,000+ additional Palestinians. UN Security Council Resolution 242 called for Israeli withdrawal — which has never fully occurred.
Intifada (انتفاضة)
Arabic for “Uprising” or “Shaking Off.” Refers to two major Palestinian uprisings: the First Intifada (1987-1993) — mass civil disobedience and stone-throwing; and the Second Intifada (2000-2005) — which included armed resistance. Over 3,000 Palestinians were killed in the Second Intifada alone.
Balfour Declaration
A letter dated 2 November 1917 from British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour promising a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine. Made without consulting the native Arab population (92% of inhabitants), it became the foundation for the British Mandate and the eventual creation of Israel. Palestinians regard it as a colonial betrayal.
Oslo Accords
A series of agreements signed between the PLO and Israel (1993-1995) that created the Palestinian Authority and divided the West Bank into Areas A, B, and C. Criticized for institutionalizing occupation — settlements doubled after Oslo, and final status issues (Jerusalem, refugees, borders) were deferred indefinitely. Many Palestinians view Oslo as a failed peace process.
British Mandate
The League of Nations granted Britain administrative control over Palestine from 1920 to 1948. The Mandate’s terms incorporated the Balfour Declaration, facilitating Jewish immigration and land purchases while suppressing Palestinian resistance. Britain handed the problem to the UN in 1947.
Legal & Human Rights Terms
Apartheid
A crime against humanity defined as “inhumane acts committed for the purpose of establishing and maintaining domination by one racial group over another.” In 2021-2022, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and B’Tselem all concluded that Israel’s system over Palestinians constitutes apartheid — based on two legal systems, segregated communities, land confiscation, and denial of self-determination.
Geneva Convention (Fourth)
The primary treaty governing the conduct of occupying powers. Israel is in systematic violation of multiple articles: Article 49 (ban on transferring civilian population — 700,000+ settlers), Article 33 (ban on collective punishment), and Article 53 (ban on destroying property unless military necessity).
Right of Return
The right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes. Affirmed by UN General Assembly Resolution 194 (1948): refugees “wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbours should be permitted to do so.” Israel has refused to implement this right for 5.9 million registered refugees.
ICJ (International Court of Justice)
The UN’s highest court. In July 2024, the ICJ issued a landmark advisory opinion declaring Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza ILLEGAL, ordering settlement evacuation and reparations. The court is also hearing the genocide case brought by South Africa.
ICC (International Criminal Court)
A permanent court that prosecutes individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. In November 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant for “starvation as a method of warfare” and directing attacks against civilians — the first time leaders of a US ally faced ICC prosecution.
Administrative Detention
Imprisonment without trial or charge, based on secret evidence. A military commander can order detention for 6 months, renewable indefinitely. Over 3,000 Palestinians are currently held in administrative detention — some for years without ever seeing a courtroom.
Political & Resistance Terms
Zionism
A political ideology founded by Theodor Herzl in 1897 advocating for a Jewish state in Palestine. It is not a religious movement — many early Zionists were secular. Distinguishing Zionism from Judaism is crucial: opposing Zionism is political dissent, while antisemitism is religious/ethnic bigotry. Many Jews (including Orthodox groups like Neturei Karta) reject Zionism.
BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions)
A global movement launched in 2005 by 170+ Palestinian civil society organizations, inspired by the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa. Demands: 1) End occupation; 2) Equality for Palestinian citizens of Israel; 3) Right of return for refugees. BDS has forced companies like G4S, Veolia, and Orange to withdraw from occupation-linked operations.
Sumud (صمود)
Arabic for “Steadfastness.” The Palestinian ethos of remaining on one’s land despite all pressures — demolitions, arrests, economic hardship. Sumud is active resistance through daily existence: rebuilding homes, farming olives, celebrating weddings. It is the reason Palestine still exists as a people and a cause.
PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization)
Founded in 1964, the PLO is the umbrella organization representing the Palestinian national movement. Chaired by Yasser Arafat from 1969 until his death in 2004, it achieved international recognition as the “sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.” The PLO signed the Oslo Accords and later established the Palestinian Authority.
Hamas
An Islamist political and military organization founded in 1987 during the First Intifada. It won the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections and has governed Gaza since 2007. Designated as a terrorist organization by Israel, the US, and EU, but recognized by many Palestinians as a resistance movement. Its military wing launched the October 7, 2023 attack.
Fatah
A secular nationalist political party founded by Yasser Arafat in 1959. The largest faction within the PLO, Fatah controls the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. It has been criticized for corruption and security coordination with Israel, leading to its loss in the 2006 elections to Hamas.
Geographic Terms
Green Line
The armistice line established after the 1948 war, separating Israel (78% of historic Palestine) from the West Bank and Gaza Strip. It is not an international border — merely a ceasefire line. Israel has never defined its final borders, and settlements beyond the Green Line are illegal under international law.
West Bank
The territory west of the Jordan River occupied by Israel in 1967. Home to approximately 3.2 million Palestinians and 500,000+ Israeli settlers. Divided into Areas A, B, and C under the Oslo Accords, with 60% (Area C) under full Israeli military and civilian control.
Gaza Strip
A 365 km² coastal enclave home to 2.3 million Palestinians — one of the densest areas on Earth. Under Israeli blockade since 2007, often described as an “open-air prison.” Israel controls all borders, airspace, and sea access. Subjected to five major wars since 2008.
East Jerusalem
The eastern half of Jerusalem, including the Old City with Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Occupied by Israel in 1967 and formally annexed in 1980 — a move rejected by the international community. The ICJ has ruled the annexation illegal. Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as their capital.
Area A / B / C
The three zones of the West Bank established by the Oslo Accords: Area A (18%) — full Palestinian civil and security control; Area B (22%) — Palestinian civil control, Israeli security control; Area C (60%) — full Israeli control, containing all settlements, most agricultural land, and water resources.
Separation Wall / Barrier
A 700+ km wall and fence complex built by Israel, cutting deep into Palestinian territory. The ICJ ruled it illegal in 2004, ordering dismantlement and compensation. The wall separates villages from their farmland, families from each other, and has become a canvas for protest art.
Cultural & Social Terms
Tatreez (تطريز)
Palestinian embroidery art, inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2021. Each motif carries meaning — from the “Moon of Bethlehem” to the “Cypress Tree” (mourning). Traditionally worn on the thobe (dress), Tatreez has become a global symbol of Palestinian identity and resistance.
Dabke (دبكة)
The Palestinian national dance — a communal circle dance with synchronized stomping. Performed at weddings, festivals, and protests. The word “dabk” means “stomping,” referencing the connection to the land. Different regions have distinct styles (Shamaliyya, Sha’rawiyya, etc.).
Handala
A cartoon character created by Naji al-Ali in 1969 — a 10-year-old barefoot refugee boy with his back turned to the world. Al-Ali turned Handala’s back in 1973 and vowed he would not turn around until Palestine is free. Handala has become the most powerful visual symbol of Palestinian displacement and resistance.
Kuffiyeh (كوفية)
The black-and-white checkered headscarf that has become the international symbol of Palestinian identity. Originally worn by farmers and Bedouins for protection from sun and sand, it became a resistance symbol during the 1936-39 Arab Revolt and was popularized by Yasser Arafat. Its pattern represents fishing nets, olive leaves, and trade routes.
Thobe (ثوب)
The traditional Palestinian embroidered dress worn by women. Each region has distinctive patterns, colors, and motifs. The thobe is not just clothing — it is a map of identity, documenting the wearer’s village, marital status, and social position. Contemporary Palestinian women wear thobes as acts of cultural preservation.
Hakawati (حكواتي)
The traditional Palestinian storyteller who narrated folktales, epics, and news in cafes and public squares. In an era before mass media, the hakawati was the keeper of collective memory. The tradition persists in cultural festivals and is being revived by contemporary artists.
Key Organizations & Figures
UNRWA (UN Relief and Works Agency)
The UN agency established in 1949 to provide relief, education, and healthcare to Palestinian refugees. It serves 5.9 million registered refugees across Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank, and Gaza — operating 700+ schools and 140+ health centers. UNRWA has faced funding cuts and attacks, with 300+ staff killed in Gaza since 2023.
Yasser Arafat (1929-2004)
The founder of Fatah and chairman of the PLO, Arafat became the international face of the Palestinian struggle for four decades. He signed the Oslo Accords in 1993 (for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize) but died under disputed circumstances in 2004. His iconic kuffiyeh became a symbol of Palestinian identity.
Mahmoud Darwish (1941-2008)
Palestine’s national poet, whose verses on exile, identity, and return became the voice of a nation. Expelled from his village al-Birwa in 1948, he lived as a refugee and exile. His poem “Identity Card” is recited across the Arab world. His funeral in Ramallah drew thousands — the largest gathering in Palestinian history.
Edward Said (1935-2003)
A Palestinian-American literary theorist, professor at Columbia University, and public intellectual. His books “Orientalism” (1978) and “The Question of Palestine” (1979) fundamentally changed how the West understands the Middle East. A vocal critic of the Oslo Accords, Said advocated for a one-state solution with equal rights for all.
Shireen Abu Akleh (1971-2022)
The Al Jazeera journalist shot dead by Israeli forces while covering a military raid in Jenin on 11 May 2022, despite wearing a press vest. Her killing — and the attack on her funeral — sparked global outrage and made her a symbol of press freedom. Her case is included in the ICC investigation.
B’Tselem
The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories — an Israeli organization documenting human rights violations. In 2021, B’Tselem issued a landmark report titled “This is Apartheid,” becoming the first major Israeli human rights group to use the term to describe Israel’s system.
Israeli Occupation & Control Terms
Occupation (الاحتلال)
A system in which a territory is placed under the effective control of a foreign military power. In Palestine-related documentation, the term commonly refers to Israel’s control over Palestinian territory occupied in 1967 and the wider system of military and administrative control experienced by Palestinians.
Military Administration
Administrative and security structures through which military authorities regulate life in occupied territory. Palestinians have experienced this through military orders, permits, checkpoints, land controls and restrictions on movement.
Checkpoint (حاجز)
A controlled crossing or road barrier that can restrict Palestinian movement between towns, villages and areas. Checkpoints can affect access to work, education, healthcare, family and essential services.
Permit Regime
A system of permissions that can determine whether Palestinians may enter, leave or move through particular areas or crossings. Requirements can vary by location, identity and changing military policy.
Administrative Detention (الاعتقال الإداري)
Detention without a conventional criminal trial under a legal framework allowing renewable detention orders. Palestinian rights organizations and international bodies have documented extensive use of administrative detention against Palestinians.
Military Order
An order issued by military authorities regulating conduct, movement, land use or other aspects of life in territory under military control. Military orders have been a major instrument of occupation governance.
Closure
A restriction that blocks or limits movement through roads, crossings or particular areas. Closures can affect access to healthcare, education, employment, food and family members.
Area A, B & C
The three administrative areas created by the Oslo process in the West Bank. The division did not end Israeli occupation or military control and remains important for understanding Palestinian movement, land use and governance.
Displacement & Refugee Terms
Nakba Displacement
The mass displacement of Palestinians during the events of 1947–1949, involving the destruction and depopulation of hundreds of Palestinian towns and villages and the creation of a large Palestinian refugee population.
Palestinian Refugee
A Palestinian displaced from their home and descendants covered by the relevant UNRWA refugee framework. Palestinian refugees remain a major unresolved issue in the history and politics of Palestine.
Internally Displaced Person (IDP)
A person forced to leave their home while remaining within their country or territory. Palestinians have experienced repeated internal displacement during wars, military operations and other forms of conflict and coercion.
Right of Return
The Palestinian demand and legal-political question concerning the return of refugees and displaced Palestinians to their homes and places of origin. It is closely associated with UN General Assembly Resolution 194 and the broader refugee issue.
Depopulation
The removal or flight of a population from a town, village or region. Palestinian historical research uses the term extensively when documenting the emptying and destruction of communities during the Nakba.
Forced Displacement
The forced movement of civilians through coercion, violence, threats or circumstances in which genuine free choice is absent. International humanitarian law places important restrictions on displacement in occupied territory.
Exile & Diaspora
Terms describing Palestinians living outside their original homes or historical homeland as a result of displacement, expulsion, war and subsequent migration. Palestinian communities now exist across the Middle East and worldwide.
Refugee Camps
Communities established to accommodate Palestinian refugees. Many began as emergency settlements and developed into long-standing communities that remain central to Palestinian refugee history and identity.
War, Genocide & International Law
Genocide
Under the 1948 Genocide Convention, genocide refers to specified acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group. In research on Gaza, distinguish allegations, investigations, provisional measures and final judicial findings.
War Crime
A serious violation of international humanitarian law that can create individual criminal responsibility when the required legal elements are established.
Crime Against Humanity
Certain widespread or systematic attacks directed against a civilian population can constitute crimes against humanity when the legal elements are met. The concept is distinct from ordinary domestic crimes and from war crimes.
Collective Punishment
Punishment imposed on persons for acts they did not personally commit. International humanitarian law prohibits collective penalties and measures of intimidation against protected persons.
Distinction
A foundational rule of international humanitarian law requiring parties to distinguish between civilians and combatants and between civilian objects and military objectives.
Proportionality
In attack law, a rule prohibiting attacks expected to cause incidental civilian harm that would be excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated.
Starvation of Civilians
International humanitarian law prohibits starvation of civilians as a method of warfare. Documentation of deprivation of food, water and other essentials is therefore central to assessing humanitarian conditions and possible violations.
Accountability
The process of investigating alleged violations, preserving evidence, identifying responsibility and pursuing appropriate judicial, disciplinary or other lawful remedies.
Settlements & Land Terms
Israeli Settlement
A civilian community established by Israel in territory occupied in 1967. UN bodies and international legal assessments have repeatedly treated Israeli settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territory as unlawful under international law.
Settlement Expansion
The growth of existing settlements through new housing, infrastructure, land appropriation and related planning or authorization measures. Expansion contributes to territorial fragmentation and pressure on Palestinian communities.
Settlement Outpost
A settlement site established outside the formally recognized settlement framework under Israeli domestic planning categories. Some outposts have later received forms of official authorization while others remain unauthorized under Israeli law.
Land Confiscation
The taking or restriction of Palestinian land through military orders, planning measures, declarations or other state mechanisms. Documentation of these practices is central to research on settlement expansion and territorial control.
Demolition
The destruction of Palestinian homes or other structures. Demolitions may be carried out under stated planning, permit, military or security grounds, and human-rights organizations document their consequences for Palestinian communities.
Annexation
The attempted extension of sovereign control over territory outside a state’s recognized sovereign territory. The international legal status of occupied Palestinian territory is addressed through international law and UN resolutions, including opposition to unilateral annexation.
Land Fragmentation
The division of Palestinian territory through settlements, roads, barriers, military zones and administrative boundaries, making movement and territorial continuity more difficult.
Settler Violence
Violence or intimidation by Israeli settlers against Palestinians and Palestinian property. UN and human-rights reporting has documented attacks affecting people, farmland, homes and communities.
International Diplomacy & UN Terms
UN General Assembly (UNGA)
The United Nations body in which all member states participate. The General Assembly has repeatedly adopted resolutions concerning Palestinian rights, refugees, settlements, Jerusalem and self-determination.
UN Security Council (UNSC)
The UN body responsible for international peace and security. Its Palestine-related record includes repeated resolutions, draft resolutions, negotiations and vetoes by permanent members.
UN Veto
The power of a permanent Security Council member to block adoption of a substantive resolution. Vetoes on Palestine-related resolutions are an important part of the diplomatic record.
Non-Member Observer State
A status granted to Palestine by the UN General Assembly in 2012. It provides Palestine with enhanced participation in the UN system without full UN membership.
International Recognition
Formal recognition of Palestine as a state by individual governments. Recognition has expanded over time, while governments differ on timing, borders and political conditions.
UN Resolution
A formally adopted text of a UN body. Resolutions vary in legal effect depending on the body, wording and applicable international law, so they should not all be treated as legally identical.
Self-Determination
The principle that peoples have the right to determine their political status and pursue their economic, social and cultural development. Palestinian self-determination is repeatedly addressed in UN resolutions and international legal discourse.
International Mediation
Diplomatic efforts by states or international organizations to negotiate ceasefires, humanitarian access, prisoner or hostage exchanges, political agreements and other measures.
Gaza & Humanitarian Terms
Gaza Blockade
Restrictions on the movement of people and goods into and out of the Gaza Strip that have severely affected civilian life. The blockade and its humanitarian consequences have been extensively documented by UN agencies and humanitarian organizations.
Humanitarian Access
The ability of humanitarian organizations and relief supplies to reach civilians in need. Access can be affected by border closures, security conditions, permissions, inspections, fighting and restrictions on movement.
Humanitarian Aid
Emergency assistance such as food, water, medicines, shelter materials and sanitation support. Humanitarian aid does not replace civilians’ rights or the obligations of parties under international humanitarian law.
Famine
An extreme food crisis defined through established technical criteria involving food deprivation, malnutrition and mortality. Gaza food-security assessments have repeatedly documented catastrophic hunger and famine risk during the war.
Internal Displacement
Movement of people within Gaza after being forced or compelled to leave their homes. Repeated displacement can occur as evacuation orders, attacks, insecurity and destruction affect different areas.
Medical Evacuation
The transfer of patients from an area where adequate treatment is unavailable to another facility or location. Gaza’s health system has faced severe shortages of functioning facilities, medicines, staff and safe access.
Humanitarian Corridor
A designated or negotiated route or arrangement intended to facilitate civilian movement or humanitarian assistance. Such arrangements do not remove the obligations of parties under international law.
Civilian Protection
The protection of civilians from the dangers of military operations and the requirement to respect rules including distinction, proportionality and precautions in attack.
Media, Propaganda & Information Terms
Hasbara (הסברה)
A Hebrew term commonly translated as ‘explaining’ or ‘public diplomacy.’ In Palestine discourse it is often used to describe Israeli state or pro-Israel communication efforts aimed at shaping international public opinion. Specific claims about an individual campaign should be supported by evidence.
Propaganda
Information or messaging designed to influence attitudes or behavior, often by emphasizing selected facts, emotional appeals or a political narrative. The term should be applied carefully and supported by analysis of the material itself.
Disinformation
False or misleading information deliberately created or spread to deceive or manipulate an audience.
Misinformation
False or inaccurate information shared without establishing that the person spreading it intended to deceive.
Information Warfare
The strategic use of information, communication systems and narratives to influence public perception, political behavior or conflict outcomes.
Media Framing
The way media organizations select, emphasize and contextualize facts, language, images and sources. Framing choices can shape how audiences understand Palestinian events.
Source Verification
The process of checking who created information, when and where it originated, whether independent evidence supports it and whether the material has been altered or taken out of context.
Citizen Journalism
Reporting or documentation produced by people who are not necessarily professional journalists. During conflict, citizen material can preserve important evidence but requires careful verification, provenance checks and attention to safety and consent.
Zionism & Political Ideologies
Zionism (ציונות)
A political and ideological movement that emerged in Europe in the late nineteenth century advocating a Jewish national home or state in Palestine. Its history must be studied alongside Palestinian dispossession, resistance and the competing national claims that developed in the same land.
Political Zionism
The form of Zionism associated with the development of a political movement seeking Jewish national sovereignty in Palestine and international support for that project.
Revisionist Zionism
A current associated with Vladimir Jabotinsky that advocated a more explicitly territorial and militarily assertive form of Zionist politics. It influenced later Israeli right-wing political traditions.
Labour Zionism
A socialist-influenced Zionist current associated with labor institutions, collective settlements and the political movement that dominated the early Israeli state.
Religious Zionism
A broad set of religious-nationalist ideas connecting Jewish sovereignty in the land with religious belief. Contemporary religious-Zionist politics contains multiple factions and interpretations.
Anti-Zionism
Opposition to Zionism as a political ideology or to the establishment and policies of a Jewish state in Palestine. Anti-Zionism is distinct from hostility toward Jews as a people or religion, although the terms are sometimes conflated in political debate.
Palestinian Nationalism
The movement and political identity centered on the Palestinian people’s collective existence, self-determination, rights, land, return and national liberation.
Settler Colonialism
An analytical framework used by many scholars to describe colonial projects in which settlers establish permanent communities and seek control over land and political power. Scholars apply this framework to Palestine in different ways, so the historical evidence behind the classification should always be shown.
